The Ultimate Rodent Proofing Checklist for NC Homes
September 16, 2025 · by Salisbury Premium Pest Control
RodentsA mouse can fit through a gap the width of a pencil. A young rat needs a quarter. That's why "the house looks sealed" is almost never true once you go looking. Here's the checklist we run on every Mice Control Reset in Salisbury, Concord, Kannapolis, and the surrounding areas.
Exterior
- Garage door bottom seal (replace if light shows through)
- Dryer vent flap (should close fully, screen intact)
- AC line chase and refrigerant pipe penetrations
- Gaps around utility box, gas meter, and hose bib penetrations
- Weep holes in brick veneer (quarter-inch hardware cloth inserts)
- Foundation vents and crawlspace access doors
- Soffit corners and roof-line gaps where trim meets brick
Interior
- Under-sink plumbing penetrations in kitchen and bathrooms
- Behind the range and dishwasher (gas line / water line entries)
- HVAC chase from crawlspace into utility closet
- Basement ceiling joist gaps at exterior wall
Sealing materials that actually work
Copper mesh + sealant for small gaps. Hardware cloth for any opening larger than a quarter. Expanding foam alone does not stop mice — they chew through it.
